Use mechanical means, such as a brush and dustpan or tongs, to prevent sharps injuries. Each department must ensure that equipment which may be contaminated with human blood or other PIMs is decontaminated prior to servicing, shipping, or handling. The servicing representative or shipment receiver must be informed of the decontamination status prior to servicing or shipping. Laundry and PPE contaminated with human blood or other PIMs must be placed in a leak-proof, labeled container marked “Potentially Infectious Materials” (or a similar marking) along with the biohazard symbol at the location where it was used. The contaminated items must then be decontaminated before re-use or disposal.
